"The Church today must revive within herself an awareness of the task to present the world again with the voice of the one who said: I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. In undertaking his ministry, the new pope knows that his task is to bring the light of Christ to shine before the men and women of today; not his own light but that of Christ."

Exerpted from, First Homily of His Holiness Benedict XVI at the End of the Eucharistic Concelebration with the Cardinal Electors in the Sistine Chapel, April 20, 2005."The Essential Pope Benedict XVI, His Central Writings and Speeches", p. 29, Harper San Francisco, 2007

"A Mystery of Light", reflections from Mane nobiscum Domini or, Stay with us Lord!

Singles of the Eucharist sprang from the “Year of the Eucharist” which ran from October 10, 2004 through October 2005. It is appropriate that the site reflect on Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic letter on this year; Mane Nobiscum Domine, in which the Holy Father wrote, would “simply offer some reflections intended to help us all to experience it (the year) in a deeper and more fruitful way” (#10).

It is in Chapter II of the letter, entitled, “The Eucharist, A Mystery of Light” that the Holy Father teaches us why the Eucharist is a Mystery of Light. The Holy Father reflected that Jesus himself described himself at the “light of the world” (John 8:12). He points out the there are moments in Christ’s life that clearly point out this quality. For example, “the Resurrection and the Transfiguration which his divine glory shines forth brightly.” Yet, he goes on to point out that, “in the Eucharist, the glory of Christ remains veiled.” The Holy Father teaches that this is a “mystery of his complete hiddenness” that “by Christ becoming a mystery of light, we as believers are led into the depths of the divine life.”

He explains that the Mass is where the Eucharist “is light above all” because it unifies the two “tables”. The Christ that is veiled and hidden in the spieces of the bread becomes evident to us through "The table of the Word of God and the table of the Bread." Through the reading of the scriptures in the Liturgy and the Priests Homily, we can find the meaning for our Christian life. Then the “word of God can touch our minds and hearts” (#13). He know longer is hidden, but His Real Presence in the Eucharist becomes our Eucharistic Lord that we can worship and adore. We no longer feel He is hidden, but in fact is standing right in front of us. The Holy Father explains that the Liturgy is a memorial event that “impels us towards the future, when Christ will come again at the end of history.” So, we are drawn to the Eucharist because it fills our Christian journey with hope. (#15).

The letter is greatly pastoral in scope so Pope John Paul II’s teaching in this letter will conclude here with the following quote from paragraph 18:

The presence of Jesus in the tabernacle must be a kind of magnetic pole attracting an ever greater number of souls enamored of him, ready to wait patiently to hear his voice and, as it were, to sense the beating of his hear. “O taste and see that the Lord is good!” (Psalm 34:8).
