We can "think with the Church" if we know the history behind the authority of "binding and losing" that God gave it.

The Gospel of Matthew 16:13: Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesare'a Philip'pi, he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that the Son of man is?" [14] And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Eli'jah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." [15] He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" [16] Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." [17] And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. [18] And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. [19] I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The Gospel of John 21:12: Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. [13] Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. [14] This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. [15] When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." [16] A second time he said to him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." [17] He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.

John 14:25-26: To console the Apostles that they, together would be able to lead because after Jesus ascended to His Father, he would send the Paraclete, the Counselor to guide them in the truth for the Church. He assures them, he has to leave, so he can send them the Paraclete. Pope John Paul II analyzed this scripture in his Encyclical, "On the Holy Spirit": (25] "These things I have spoken to you, while I am still with you. [26] But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

"Not just sometimes, but at the deepest level, we confess,"I do not understand but I believe." And, in believing we understand in a way that, as St. Paul puts it, "surpasses understanding." We are finite, God is infinite. In the twelfth century, St. Anselm wrote, "God is that greater than which cannot be thought." The church teaches us how to think and speak rightly about that which cannot be adequately thought or spoken. And it sometimes happens that the Church will muster her full authority and infallibly pronouce on a question in dispute. It is initself infallibly taught that the Church will never require assent to what is false. When the church speaks infallibily, the faithful Catholic assents with heart and mind. We may not understand the pronoucement, we may think the teaching poorly expressed or inadequately supported by argument, but we obey, remembering that the etymology of obedience is "responsive listening."

"We obey because we trust the words of Christ to his apostles and to their successors who are the bishops in union with the bishop of Rome. We obey because the ministry ofthe Magisterium is the ministry of unity, and unity is part of the truth that Christ wills for His Church. The alternative to obedience is to turn the conversation into a cacophony of Christians making it up as they go along. Obedience does not come easily for there is in all of us the rebellious spirit of John Milton's Satan, who would rather rule in hell than obey in heaven. If we will not have obedience, if we will not abide the self-discipline that is involved in sentire cum ecclesia (thinking with the Church), then we would be well advised to make our acquaintance with the innumerable denominations and sects, or start one of our own."

The Vatican II document, the, "Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World", teaches that, the teaching authority of the Church, "the authentic interpreter of divine law"(GS, 50).
