Pope Benedict XVI referenced the theologian, Henri de Lubac as the one who first "brilliantly described more than a half-centry ago in his book Catholicism that "a true spirituality of Communion seen in its Christological profundity, therefore, necessarily has a 'social character'."
Expounding upon this thesis, Pope Benedict XVI said that the Eucharist is a “social sacrament to the highest degree when it is understood in the intimacy of the union of each person with the Lord.”
“Whoever recognizes the Lord in the tabernacle recognizes him in the suffering and the needy; they are among those to whom the world’s judge will say, “I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you visited me; I was in prison and you came to me” (Matthew 25:35).
